Vanderbilt LifeFlight began providing medical transport services in 1984. In 2009, the program added two EC-135 helicopters to replace its long-serving BK117s. With a more compact airframe, a smoother ride, greater fuel efficiency, and an enclosed Fenestron tail rotor that gave crews more clearance around the helicopter, the EC-135 quickly became a distinctive part of the LifeFlight fleet.
One helicopter to wear the Vanderbilt LifeFlight colors was N105VU, a 2008-built EC-135 T2+. It carried patients between communities and medical centers across Tennessee. Its black, white, and gold exterior was never overly decorative, yet it conveyed exactly what an air ambulance should: professionalism, purpose, and a constant readiness to launch.

Keeping the Air-Rescue Story Alive in Scale Flight

Its clean white fuselage contrasts sharply with the black tail section, while gold accents sweep back from the cockpit and add warmth to the restrained color scheme. Together with the four-blade main rotor, wide cockpit windows, streamlined nose, and enclosed Fenestron tail rotor, the livery highlights the unmistakable EC-135 silhouette.
Sitting on a bench, it looks like a rescue helicopter waiting in the hangar for its next call. Take it to the field, spool up the rotor, and the same black, white, and gold finish reveals a different character from every angle.
It is not a loud or flashy scheme, but it rewards a closer look. During a low pass or a coordinated turn, the long black tail visually stretches the fuselage, giving the EC-135 a crisp and instantly recognizable profile in the air.
More Than a Display Model
For scale helicopter enthusiasts, building a collection is not simply about adding more models. The best scale fleets are made up of aircraft with their own identity, and the EC-135 has plenty of it.
Its rounded nose, broad cockpit glazing, four-blade rotor, and signature Fenestron tail make it stand apart from the utility and military helicopters commonly seen in RC collections. With the rotor blades installed, the EC-135 measures approximately 95 × 30 × 20 cm and weighs approximately 1,200 g without the flight battery.Its generous scale size fully showcases realistic cockpit proportions, fuselage contours, and rotor geometry,but this is not a scale helicopter built only for the shelf.
Out at the field, the EC-135 takes on a completely different personality. As the four-blade rotor comes up to speed and the black tail sweeps across the grass or sky, the static lines of the fuselage come alive through hovering, low passes, and smooth turns. On display, it is a detailed scale model. In the air, it begins to look like a rescue helicopter working its route.
The ACE flight control system and multi-link GNSS positioning support assist with outdoor hovering, giving the pilot a more relaxed feel on the sticks. Soft Mode is a comfortable place to begin, while Normal and Sport modes offer progressively more responsive handling as familiarity grows.
During a turn, the coordinated-turn function adds roll according to the helicopter’s speed, allowing the EC-135 to bank naturally into the arc. It is the kind of movement that shows off the four-blade rotor and long fuselage particularly well.

The EC-135 is designed for a 4S 5000mAh LiPo battery. Under windless, sea-level hover test conditions, maximum flight time is approximately 18 minutes.
At the field, that gives you room to enjoy the model instead of rushing through a short routine. Begin with a close hover, ease into a slow side-on pass, open the distance for a broad turn, and bring the nose gently back toward yourself. The EC-135 feels best when it is flown with the same measured, purposeful character suggested by its rescue livery.
The 18-minute flight time is a controlled laboratory reference. Actual flight duration varies depending on wind conditions, pilot input, and battery health.Wind, control input, and battery condition will all affect the result. Bringing the aircraft back when the low-battery indication appears is the best way to finish the flight as smoothly as it began.
